Many of the company's models increased in sales.
2020 was a challenging year for most automakers, but Mazda found a way to end the year on a high note thanks to new models like the CX-30 crossovers. The Japanese automaker weathered the storm of the global pandemic, ramping production by the end of the year. Mazda has just posted its final US sales figures for 2020 with 31,308 vehicles sold. Not only is this an 18.2% increase compared to December 2019, but it is also the company's best December ever.
Mazda sold 279,076 vehicles in all of 2020, an increase of 0.2% compared to 2019. While this isn't a huge increase, seeing any improvement is impressive given the current global sales climate. It is worth noting, though, that 2019 was a poor sales year for Mazda, where the automaker's sales declined by 7.2% compared to 2018 when it sold 300,025 vehicles.
As with previous years, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover remained the best-selling model with 146,420 units sold, a decrease of 5.3% compared to 2019. Strong CX-30 sales of 38,604 units could explain the CX-5's slight decline, as some buyers look to downsize to a smaller model. In its first full year on sale, the CX-30 impressively finished as Mazda's second-best-selling model. The midsize CX-9 also posted a 2.9% gain to 27,638 units, resulting in an 11% overall increase in sales for the brand's SUV models.
As for Mazda's car models, those did not fair as well. Mazda3 sales declined by 33.8% to 33,608 units, and Mazda6 sales dropped by 24.7% to 16,204 units. In some positive news, the MX-5 Miata's demand rose in 2019, resulting in 8,807 units sold, a 13.6% increase.
