First-Gen Subaru BRZ Shows Less Is More

Keep it simple, stupid.
The first-generation Subaru BRZ, alongside the Toyota 86 have become some of the world’s most beloved tuner cars of the past decade. These affordable sports cars offer a beautifully balanced driving experience that entertains both novice and expert drivers, and despite their relatively low power outputs, tuners have invested millions into developing parts for them. The aftermarket scene is flooded with parts for the BRZ, and we’ve seen some crazy builds in years past, but most of the time simpler is better. A case in point is this first-gen BRZ that has been tuned by Barracuda Racing Wheels. Some subtle changes have turned this BRZ into a tasty OEM plus sleeper.
Barracuda offers BRZ owners a mild tuning package that consists of a set of 19-inch five double-spoke design Shoxx wheels finished in matte black and wrapped in 225/35 tires, as well as a set of coilovers. These wheels perfectly fill the arches of the BRZ, which in standard form looks a bit weedy in the wheel department, and Barracuda also offers them in sizes ranging from 18-inches to 20-inches. A bronze finish is also available. To complete the car's stance, Barracuda has fitted a set of ST X coilovers which bring things closer to terra firma. The overall look is planted and mean, just the way the BRZ should have come from the factory.
Under the hood, things remain unchanged, which means you get the standard naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter boxer motor producing 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The BRZ and 86 have been widely criticized for their lack of power, but the next-gen cars promise to bring more power thanks to a new 2.4-liter engine producing 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The second-gen BRZ was revealed last month, and things are looking promising for an STI version, so fans of the first car definitely have something to look forward to.
