All-New 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Is A Three-Row Off-Road Luxury Rockstar

Including a plug-in 4xe version.
At the end of 2020, Jeep showed off the Grand Wagoneer Concept as a future flagship SUV. The Grand Wagoneer won't be the brand's only new full-size SUV, though, as the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L has just debuted.
The longer, three-row 'L' model rides on an all-new vehicle architecture with independent front and rear suspensions with a class-exclusive Quadra-Lift air suspension. Combined with electronic adaptive damping, Jeep says the new Grand Cherokee will deliver premium on-road driving characteristics.
The new Grand Cherokee L three-row model will arrive at dealerships in the second quarter of 2021, while the familiar two-row model will arrive later in 2021 along with an electrified 4xe variant.

Jeep didn't reveal any details about the 4xe, but we assume it will boast similar power as the Wrangler 4xe. For reference, that model produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and electric motor combination. Jeep did reveal the base engine, a familiar 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 290 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. The V6 provides a 6,200-pound towing capacity and an estimated class-leading driving range of nearly 500 miles.
A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is the optional engine, producing 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Jeep says this engine will boast a 7,200-pound towing capacity with the ability to shut down four cylinders for greater efficiency.
No SRT variant was announced, but it will likely be coming soon. Both engines send power out through a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Cherokee features a new 4×4 is a front-axle disconnect, which can default to rear-wheel-drive when all-wheel-drive is not required.
Of course, the Grand Cherokee still retains Jeep's legendary off-road ability. Three different 4×4 systems will be available, all of which include an active transfer case. There is the Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II, the latter of which comes with a rear electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD). The Quadra-Lift air suspension can lift the vehicle with five ride height settings to aid with ground clearance.
The normal setting offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance but can raise up to 10.9 inches in its Off-Road 2 Mode to provide up to 24 inches of water fording depth. There are also Park and Aero Modes to lower the suspension on-demand. Jeep says the Grand Cherokee boasts a 30.1-degree approach angle, a 23.6-degree departure angle, and a 22.6-degree breakover angle with this suspension optioned. A Selec-Terrain traction management system is also on-hand, giving owners access to five terrain modes, including Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Mud/Sand.
The 2021 Grand Cherokee L boasts all-new styling and a luxurious new interior to go along with all the clever engineering underneath. The styling is a bold departure from the outgoing model, ushering in a more modern Jeep era. The Grand Cherokee L model pays homage to the original Wagoneer, the brand's first full-size SUV, with a forward-tipped grille. All-new slim LED headlights give off a luxurious demeanor, while the traditional seven-slot grille is a reminder that this is still a capable Jeep. The side and rear fascias look vastly different than before, underscoring that this is an all-new model.
Inside, it's a similar story. The decade-old cabin has been thrown away, and Jeep has borrowed the best of what's available in the FCA portfolio. In the center sits an available 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which ties in with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. To control that cluster, drivers grip a new multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters. That steering wheel is leather-wrapped with Absolute Oak trim on Summit trims and open-pore Waxed Walnut on the Summit Reserve Package.
Now with three rows of seats, the Grand Cherokee L can sit six or seven adults. Heated and ventilated seats are available in the first two rows and massaging seats are also available on the Overland and Summit models. Rear captain's chairs sit on either side of a new second-row console with cupholders. All occupants will remain comfortable and entertained with up to 12 USB Type A and Type C ports, five-color LED lighting, four-zone automatic temperature control with vents in all three rows, and an available McIntosh audio system with 19 speakers powering 950 watts.
Cargo space behind the second row is a generous 46.9 cubic feet, while that space opens to 84.6 cubic feet with both rows folded. This is the first FCA vehicle to feature an available electronic remote release, allowing owners to lower the second and third rows easily.
Jeep didn't announce any pricing information but mentions that the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L will be available with its Jeep Wave customer service program with three years of worry-free maintenance. Both vehicles will be built at FCA's new Detroit Assembly Complex Mack Plant, which launches in the first quarter of 2021. Like all Jeep vehicles, there will be over 500 Mopar Performance Parts, including integrated side steps, all-weather floor mats, a rear-seat entertainment system, molded splash guards, paint-protection film, roof-rack crossbars, rock rails, and unique 21-inch wheels.
